It is with great sadness that we report the passing of Floyd Dakil, one of the members of Louis Prima's band, The Witnesses during the years 1969, and 1972-1974. He was a fantastic talent, a true gentleman, and also a recording star on his own. His rock single "Dance, Franny, Dance," recorded in 1964 for Jetstar Records was a regional hit in Texas. Floyd recently completed recording a new CD this past March.

Ron or Gia,

Did Louis and/or Sam write the song "You Never Know When a Woman's Gonna Change Her Mind"?

I have searched the song, and Sam is the only one I've found who recorded it. Love the song, just curious about it.

Never knew the whole story but I have always loved Louis' music.
He had the most unique voice, never been anyone close to him. Thanks for this site. I'll be back.

I had the pleasure of working with Sam at the Tropicana Hotel. My band, Lil Elmo & The Cosmos, followed Sam's band, where he would play from 5PM-9Pm. He was a great showman, plus he had the greatest drummer playing with him at the time, Chuck Stevens, Connie's Brother....This was about the early to mid 90's....RIP SAM

Hi...My mother is Cathy Allen who sang and recorded with Louis. I have a few great photos and newspaper clipping in my mom's scapbooks that I obtained when she passed away in 1994. I can scan one or two if you would like for the site. One is particularly cool of her and Louis onstage. She always spoke highly of Louis and I heard great stories of her times with the band throughout my life. I just discovered the web site through my cousin Christina and wanted to connect. Louis was a great artist and entertainer and I am always proud to tell people that my mom sang with him.

I grew up listening to the music of Louis Prima. My brother Nick played his records for me and I couldn't get enough. When I was very young, my favorite song was "Jump, Jive and Wail" and I would beg my brother to play it all the time. Though I later listened to the Beatles and other popular bands, I continued to listen to Louis Prima as well. In 1966, when I was 10 years old, Nick and his wife Dolores took me to see Louis Prima with Gia Maione, Sam Butera and the Witnesses. The show was in an auditorium in my home town of Baton Rouge, LA but it was set up like a night club with tables. How they managed to get me into an adult venue still amazes me and I am forever grateful to them for bringing me, because this show was one of the best I have ever seen. I will never forget how hard that band swung and how much energy they all had. They did all the old songs as well as new ones and I remember being totally mesmerized by them. When the show ended, we went backstage and saw Louis and Gia walking out. My brother shouted out "Mr. Prima this is Louis Benedetto and he loves all your records". They stopped and came over to meet me and posed for a picture. I treausre that picture and I treasure the memory of having seen them live. I played Louis Prima for my children and they too love his music. Great music does not fade away, it stays great no matter what is popular and no matter when it was recorded. Louis Prima's music is classic and timeless and will be always be appreciated by anyone who loves music.

I remember spending a fab evening at Ben Masiks in 1959 with my girlfiend Carole Meltzer for her sweet 16th B-day. The show was off the hook and the whole place was really great. Ben was definitly a visionary and if he was around today his show would be top show in Vegas. don't you think?

My father got me into Louis when I was a child. One of the first memories of music was Louis and the band doing "In the Mood" Dad said "come here and listen...Louis is singing "Dipsy Doodle'""
Buona Sera was his fave and it has also become mine. I favor l the Sax of Sam above all saxmen. He was a giant. I play an average sax...just good enough to know how over the top he was.
I wish to thank all in the Prima famly and all the gang for enriching my life beyond measure with this music . Just now I listen to Sam playing O solo Mio/ Love of my Life and it is as if he and Louis play to me from heaven.
kindest regards,
Ray
