I was trying to show my 14 year-old son what a "total package" looked like on an entertainer and musician. I showed him some of the videos of Louis, such as When You're Smiling/Oh Marie, and I think he understood. It wasn't hi-tech and it wasn't special effects. It was talent and personality and enthusiasm. I'm 44 and only starting to appreciate just what an individual he was. I'm so glad that his recordings and videos are available. I don't even bother with current music - I go back to these giants of music and just enjoy.

Cruise over to the Jukebox and check out two new additions: Blast Off! and This is Gia. If you dig Blast Off! you can download it from Amazon, and if you dig Gia's pipes (and trust me--you will) you get This is Gia free when you order Gigolo through our very own Shop Louis link to your left. That's right--two CDs for one low price. While you're in the Shop Louis universe of great gear, don't forget to snag a t-shirt and some coffee mugs. You can't find this stuff anywhere else!

Dear Mrs. Prima,

I want to comment on your description of Sam Butera as an incredible sax player and agree that he was underappreciated in terms of his musical talent.
I grew up in the South and moved to L.A. where I played keyboard and sax in a 1980s pop group called the Motels. In my musical journeys I luckily got hold of some Louis Prima albums. I was in awe of Louis' musicianship--he sang like a trumpet, he played trumpet blazingly when he decided to take a solo--and then was really amazed by Sam Butera's sax playing. I don't know where to start, the tone or the solos. He got the best tenor sax tone I've ever heard, including King Curtis and other great R&B honkers. I don't know how he did it. His solos had perfect structure. I eventually found a copy of The Big Horn, his Capitol Records solo album, and I practically memorized a lot of the solos, starting with La Vie in Rose...yes, Butera was pure rock 'n' roll, actually, with more interesting chord progressions. He was incredible. I'm sorry to hear of his passing but I'm sure glad he met Louis Prima.

Gia,

My dad was the ringside waiter at Ben Masiks "Town and Country Club" from 1948 until 1966. He had wonderful stories about the club and the stars that would appear there. He had such nice things to say about Louie, noting that he loved his golf and that he would perform all night and be on the course early the next morning as it was in close proximity to the club....My dad had some great pics of himself and Louie at the club. It was a wonderful time and sadly never be duplicated. He noted that the acts would often socialize with the wait staff that numbered 70+ waiters.... My dads photo album is priceless and one I love to share...

I learned a lot about Mr. Prima from this website. I had only really known of him as the voice/music of King Louis in The Jungle Book (I work for a division of Disney).

I love his music and style!

Thanks so much for creating this site, sharing this info and preserving his legacy.

TO PLAY KENO.....
RESEARCH, MY FOOT!!! I LIVED IT!!! GET REAL, THIS IS NOT BIAS.. LIES ARE LIES AND TRUTH IS TRUTH AND TRUTH MATTERS!!! Louis certainly was not perfect and had his faults, but these lies are total defamation of his character.

Way to put it out there, Gia!
In Graceland they say "Before anybody did anything, Elvis did everything!" Really, though, before Elvis did anything, Louis Prima did everything. The same way some people get their kicks dogging Elvis, emphasizing his last years with no compassion--some people get their kicks out of dumping on Louis. They are a small but vocal minority, and he's not here to defend himself. I'm glad you are here to keep the man where he belongs--on top.

some very interesting points... but i think your research and bias leaves a lot to be desired... then of course, that's just my opinion...
have a great day... definitely a thought-provoking post!
